Federal Tax Credits End in December
If you’ve been thinking about replacing your air conditioning system, there are big financial benefits to doing it before December 31, 2010. U.S. homeowners can get a whopping 30% Tax Credit (up to $1500) for installing a qualified Energy Star-rated A/C unit in 2010. In addition, SRP and APS are offering rebates for qualified high efficiency units. Air conditioner manufacturers are also sweetening the deal by giving their own rebates on equipment to help homeowners get the most bang for their buck.
If that isn’t enough of a reason to get serious about replacing your older unit, then you should know that air conditioners today use 30% less electricity (and in most cases even better) than a model that is 15-years-old. You will save on monthly utilities; have fewer air conditioner repairs and the extra comfort that will continue years past your breakeven point on the new system. If you would like to know your breakeven point on purchasing a new system, you can have a local air conditioning contractor give you a calculated estimate based on the energy efficiency of a new unit, the size of your home and a price quote.
Whatever system you get, look at the energy ratings (SEER). The higher, the better, which can mean considerable savings on your overall energy bill. As of Jan. 2006, new air conditioner units sold must have a SEER of at least 13, although they go as high as 19 SEER. The SEER rating will also play an important role in how much you will save in rebates.
